A senior Russian MP lashed out on Wednesday...

"Instead of uniting the nation, we are dividing it," State Duma Security Committee head Vladimir Vasilyev said, proposing that the issue be dealt with "on a legislative level."

"In the case of a terrorist attack, we start dividing [society] into rich and poor, not into criminals, law enforcers and victims. We divide it into rich and poor. And this is being done publicly," he said, without offering any examples.

He echoed the position of another MP, Robert Shlegel, who on Monday proposed amending the country"s laws to forbid media outlets from broadcasting statements by terrorists.

The move came a week after twin suicide bombs ripped through the Moscow metro, killing at least 40. A subsequent statement by Chechen militant Doku Umarov claiming responsibility for the attack was given widespread media coverage.

However, media experts condemned Shlegel"s plans, calling them a "PR stunt."
