MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russian...

"A special agreement is now being drafted between our countries on the project"s implementation and the federal chancellor and I spoke for finishing the work on the document within a short period of time," Putin said after talks in Moscow with Faymann.

The South Stream gas project, scheduled to be completed by 2015, is part of Russia"s efforts to cut dependence on transit nations. It is a rival project to the EU-backed Nabucco, which would bypass Russia.

The 25 billion-euro ($36.5 bln) project is designed to annually pump 31 billion cubic meters of Central Asian and Russian gas to the Balkans and on to other European countries, bypassing Ukraine, which has frequent disputes with Russia over gas supplies and transits. The pipeline"s capacity is expected to be eventually increased to 63 billion cubic meters.

On May 15, Russian energy giant Gazprom signed a package of project-related documents with Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. Similar agreements are now being coordinated

MOSCOW, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - The European...

MOSCOW, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - The European Constitution does not take into account moral traditions which causes protests against this document, Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow and All Russia said. "In my opinion, protests against the European Constitution are caused by its failure to meet the interests, moral traditions and history of France and Holland," Alexis II said after the meeting with Speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Pier Ferdinando Casini on Tuesday. "In this case, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church have a common position. We believe that the European Constitution should mention common Christian roots as the basis of European culture," Alexis II said. "Ignoring this means countering the real truth," he added. Casini agreed with the churches" position on this issue. According to the patriarch, striving for bringing Europe back to common Christian roots will promote rapprochement of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches. "The return to common Christian roots, the basis of European culture, may promote rapprochement and ecumenical development between European churches," Alexis II said. The Moscow patriarchate said that "ecumenical development" meant "common interests of Christian churches against de-Christianization of Europe and solution of other problems." Alexis II and Casini agreed that the draft constitution "had no soul." The sides also discussed the problems of proselytism and sects, which destroy the Christian culture.

ST. PETERSBURG, August 22 (RIA Novosti)...

ST. PETERSBURG, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - Close relatives of the crew of the Arctic Sea cargo ship have still not had any contacts with their loved ones, the wife of one of the sailors told RIA Novosti on Saturday. "As before, there is no communication. Everything we know is from what is shown on television," said the woman, who saw pictures of her husband on television after he arrived in Moscow on a Russian military plane. The Arctic Sea was found and freed by a Russian warship on Monday, more than two weeks after it disappeared. Eleven of the crew and eight suspected hijackers were flown to Russia from the Cape Verde islands on Thursday. The wife of another sailor, who apparently is among the four who remain on the ship while it is towed to the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk for further investigation, said she has received no information on his fate. "So far, there has been no communication," she said. Russian investigators said on Friday that the sailors were being treated in strict accordance with the law and were free to move around as they pleased and make telephone calls if they wished. "Reports in a number of media outlets that the rights of participants in the criminal process have been infringed do not correspond to reality," the Investigations Committee said in a statement. The Maltese-flagged cargo vessel was found off Cape Verde on Monday with 15 Russian crewmembers and eight suspected hijackers on board. The ship was freed by the Russian Ladny missile frigate without a single shot being fired. A Moscow court on Friday sanctioned the detention of the suspected hijackers, who were taken straight to a high-security prison in Moscow after landing at a military airfield near the capital on Thursday.
